The encounter design is better than Pathfinder's, but worse than BG3's, and suffers from a huge lack of enemy variety in some of the campaigns. Playing on the hardest combat level in Solasta does require some strategy, but all the other levels feel like story mode. If the combat doesn't require much thought and planning, it just ruins the game for me. I love the strategy involved in turned based combat particularly. Solasta: Crown of the Magister isnt content with just being a straight D&D adaptation. I've been playing turn based RPG's for decades and am enjoying Solasta. It makes solid use of 5E's rarely used cover system, unlike BG3, and has a mostly-fully fleshed-out Reaction system (with all of the clunk that comes with completely stopping the game every time you could possibly react to anything). But even without this, the game is a complete D&D-style role-playing package on its own. If I had to choose, Solasta would stand out in its attempt to fully-implement DnD's combat rules. You rarely if ever actually make choices or have any agency beyond choosing your combat tactics. Its a fairly typical setting that doesnt stray too far from what D&D players are used to, though it does feel a little like fantasy cheese at. It's not much of an RPG it's incredibly linear and combat-focused. Solasta isn't really in a competition with those other games.
